Go-Go Take First Game Over Vipers, 135-117

The Capital City Go-Go, the NBA G League affiliate of the Washington Wizards, defeated the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, 135-117, in the first matchup between the two teams since 2018.

The Go-Go’s defensive efforts were key to their victory. With the Vipers coming into the night leading the league in offensive rebounds, the Go-Go held them to six offensive rebounds and three second-chance points. Additionally, Capital City saw great individual performances across the roster, with three players grabbing three or more steals including Wizards assignee Johnny Davis having a career-high seven steals on the night.

The Go-Go also brought offensive firepower in one of their best three-point shooting nights of the season, making 14 totals threes while shooting .467 from beyond the arc. For the second-straight night, Taylor Funk led the team in three-point shooting efforts, making five threes for the second-straight game and scoring a new career-high 22 points. The Vipers fought back in the fourth quarter, putting up 38 points, but the Go-Go held onto victory, defeating the Vipers 135-117.

Wizards two-way player Jules Bernard led the Go-Go in scoring with 25 points while bringing down eight rebounds and getting three steals. Davis was the Go-Go’s third-highest scorer after Funk, filling up the stats sheet with 19 points, nine rebounds, five assists, seven steals and a block on the night. Wizards two-way Jared Butler also had a strong performance with 16 points and four steals. Davion Mintz (14), Hamidou Diallo (12) and Michael Foster Jr. (12) rounded out the double-digit scorers. Assignment player Patrick Baldwin Jr. led the team in rebounds with 11.

The Vipers saw three players score over 20 points, with Nate Williams and Darius Days leading the way with 26 points each. Days also lead the team with nine rebounds and Joshua Obiesie put up 22 points off the bench. John Knight III led the team in assists with eight.

The Go-Go will rematch the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in their next meeting on Thursday, February 8 during Education Day at 11:30 a.m. at the Entertainment and Sports Arena. Tickets for the game are available via Ticketmaster.
