WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Capital City Go-Go (5-4), the NBA G League affiliate of the Washington Wizards, were defeated in overtime by the Westchester Knicks (3-6), 115-112, at the Entertainment and Sports Arena on Wednesday night.
Westchester earned its first-ever victory in D.C. against the Go-Go, prevailing in a game that featured 24 lead changes and 11 ties. Each team overcame a double-digit deficit in the game, the Knicks doing so with an 11-point turnaround in the fourth quarter. Westchester took its biggest lead of the game in the third quarter, using a 17-0 run to take a 13-point advantage. The Go-Go battled back, ending the third quarter on a 12-2 run and a Cassius Winston step-back buzzer beater to trail by only three entering the final frame. The Go-Go closed each of the first three quarters on a buzzer beater.
In the fourth with the game tied at 106, Joel Ayayi laid in the go-ahead basket for the Go-Go with 0.9 seconds remaining. Following a timeout, Westchester inbounded to Dewan Hernandez, who was fouled and knocked down both free throws to send the game to overtime. A timely three by Tyler Hall and free throws down the stretch gave the Knicks the win.
The Go-Go were led by Greg Monroe’s season-high 28 points and 11 rebounds, helping lead the team to a season-high 82 points in the paint. Cassius Winston scored 16 points and added seven assists off the bench. DeJon Jarreau scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds in his Go-Go debut.
Westchester was led by Dewan Hernandez, who finished with 24 points and nine rebounds. Brandon Williams recorded a 22-point, 10-assist double-double, while Aamir Simms and Tyler Hall combined for nine of Westchester’s 14 made threes on the night.
The Go-Go will be back in action on Friday night, as they host the G League Ignite on their tour at 7:00 p.m. Westchester will head home to take on the Delaware Blue Coats on February 1.
