WHAT is the G League Winter Showcase?
The NBA G League Winter Showcase is the NBA’s annual in-season scouting event for the more than 200 players on NBA G League rosters. It provides an opportunity for teams to play in front of NBA general managers and player personnel executives from all 30 NBA teams in hopes of landing an NBA contract. The winner of the tournament also takes home a $100,000 prize. This year marks the showcase’s 19th anniversary.
The showcase takes place during a point in the season in which NBA teams can sign free agents to 10-day contracts. Most players on NBA G League rosters are free agents who are eligible to be signed by any NBA team. Thus, an influx of deals typically occur during and after the Winter Showcase each year. More than 100 players have earned call-ups during or immediately after the last 18 Winter Showcases.
WHO plays in the tournament?
Beginning Friday, November 10, the G League’s 30 teams and G League Ignite were separated into four regional pods and were scheduled to play 14 games against one another in NBA G League markets. The teams with the best winning percentage in each regional pod, along with the next four teams across the league with the best winning percentages, will play for the Showcase Cup Championship during the Winter Showcase. The remaining teams will each play two games outside of the Showcase Cup Tournament during the event.
At the conclusion of the Winter Showcase, team records will reset, and the 34-game regular season will begin on Wednesday, December 27. This gives each team a grand total of 50 games played during the season.
